Born on July 14, 1934 in Aberdeen, Washington, USA. Studied at the Art Center School in Los Angeles (1953–1955) before moving to New York in 1956. This led to connections with photographers such as Walker Evans, Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand and Diane Arbus. An avid jazz fan, he also worked for record labels. From 1960 onwards, he was increasingly able to pursue independent projects, publishing numerous photo books of his thematic series: landscapes, nudes and city and street scenes. His realistic yet highly individual visual language has made him one of the most important photographers of his generation, receiving numerous awards. He lives in New York State.
